<p>Plus, the cost of moving is usually at least several hundred dollars, and if you are moving cross-country with a lot of things, it can be as high as $11,000. Well, no more horror stories. Whether you are scheduled to move next month or in the next six months, get your boxes in a row with these tips.</p>
<p>Request that your estimate be guaranteed. No one wants to be bushwhacked by a fee higher than the original estimate after the job is complete. Find a mover that will guarantee they won&#8217;t exceed their estimate.</p>
<p>Review your mover&#8217;s insurance policy. Movers will often insure your items as part of the moving price. Ask if they calculate their insurance by weight or by the item&#8217;s value. Educate yourself about the different types of moving insurance, then ask about insurance policies when you compare your estimates. Moving.com offers a program to compare estimates.</p>
<p>Check to verify there are no hidden fees. Movers may charge and extra fee for extremely heavy items, items that need to be dismantled, gas lines that have to be disconnected, traveling up and down flights of stairs, and driveways that are too narrow (the movers have to transport your things to and from the truck rather than pulling up to the entrance). Have a discussion with the movers about these issues when you receive your estimate.</p>
<p>Tip the movers. Don&#8217;t forget about tipping the movers and providing cold drinks for them. If there are one or two movers, the tip would typically be at least $40 to $60. If there are more than that add $20 per mover.</p>
<p>Compare your estimated value of your belongings to the moving company&#8217;s. Review the moving contract for its estimated value of your possessions, and compare that to your estimation. If there&#8217;s a big difference, then consider asking for a different contract or working with another moving company.</p>

Prior to the movers arriving, call ahead to ask the size of their wardrobe boxes. Calculate how many you will need by measuring the clothes and coats in your closet. Make sure you pack your clothes securely so they don&#8217;t move around or fall off their hangers. You can also add in bulky items like shoe boxes (taped closed) and containers. Don&#8217;t make these large boxes too heavy.</p>

<p>Alterations &#8211; extra bedroom without adding floor space 6%</p>
<p>Loft Conversion &#8211; extra bedroom and en-suite 21%</p>

<p>Making the most of your home</p>
<p>Kitchens</p>
<p>Choose units that will not date and where-ever possible fit granite worktops. The kitchen should be of a generous size and preferably overlooking the rear garden.</p>

<p>White sanitary fittings are a must. A 4 bed house should have 1 bathroom and 1 ensuite, a 5/6 bedroom house should have 1 bathroom and 2/3 ensuites.</p>
<p>Downstairs</p>

<p>A downstairs toilet can be located almost anywhere. An external window and separate lobby are now not required. A downstairs WC is on most home-buyers wish-list.</p>
<p>Reception Rooms</p>
<p>Preferably a house of over 4 beds should have at least two separate reception rooms.</p>
<p>I remember once locking myself out of my flat and, being fairly new to the city, not having the faintest idea how to locate a locksmith in a massive metropolis where I knew no one. A lot of stress, several phone calls and a fair bit of money later I was back in the flat, but that day taught me two valuable lessons. Firstly, don&#8217;t leave your keys in your work suit over the weekend.
